Gender-based violence

Thuthuzela Care Centre (TCC) Site Coordinator Charmaine Hansen reflects on the commitment of the local TCC to empowering survivors, building trust and creating a community united against gender-based violence (GBV).

Established in April 2015, the Atlantis TCC initially faced a cautious community response. However, as Hansen explains: “As time went on and the community became more sensitised, more and more cases were reported. That speaks of trusting the service, and that is what we aim to provide.”

Community engagement has been a top priority, with regular awareness campaigns reaching schools, churches, clinics and youth groups. “We try to engage and empower, targeting specific areas when it comes to particular groups or reports. We identify challenges, like minors engaging in risky behaviour, and address them through workshops,” Hansen explains.

TCCs offer a comprehensive array of services tailored to meet the unique needs of GBV survivors. The services are accessible 24/7, and survivors can choose from a range of support options, with minors receiving the complete set of services. Provided free of charge, the services include medical support crucial for evidence collection, counselling for survivors and their families, and referrals to shelters for those unable to return home.

The commitment of the TCCs extends beyond the resolution of a case, with ongoing support to ensure survivors continue their journey towards healing. This holistic approach, Hansen notes, not only aims to address immediate needs but also helps to prevent secondary victimisation.

“Survivors that have accessed our service become champions themselves and refer the community to our office. I believe it is commendable when the community trusts in a system that they accessed, and they become the champions in the community.”
